On Monday 22nd November, LloydsDirect hosted an Islamophobia Awareness Lunch & Learn for their staff network as part of their equality and diversity work.
During the session, staff were taken through the current landscape relating to Islamophobia in the UK and practical steps that can be taken to start to address the issue. The talk began by defining Islamophobia and the importance of a definition when tackling any sort of societal issue.
The talk then moved on to look at the extent of Islamophobia in the UK and the different spaces that Islamophobia can find itself and the different ways that it is manifested. The next section of the session spoke about the causes of Islamophobia and what factors lead to it being perpetuated in society and how the stereotyping of Muslims can lead to barriers to Muslim participation. Practical steps to addressing Islamophobia were then covered next with a particular focus on addressing workplace discrimination and how employers can work to build more inclusive work environments.
Many thanks to the team at LloydsDirect for organising this event and for the staff on the call for their insightful contributions.
