MEND were requested to facilitate a workshop online via Microsoft Teams to members of the NEU as part of a two day event titled Black Educators Conference.
12 participants attended the workshop which was focused on understanding, recognising and responding to Islamophobia in Schools.
The Workshop encouraged some interesting discussions and participants who were all teachers in schools shared the struggles they faced tackling the issue of Islamophobia. Non-Muslim teachers felt they didn’t have the expertise or knowledge to address Islamophobia and the Muslim teachers shared that they were worried to take a lead on tackling Islamophobia because they may be accused of pushing a personal agenda.
They suggested greater awareness through newsletters and a calendar of Islamophobia awareness events would be a useful starting point.
