Women for Change in Leicester had requested MEND to come and speak at two of their in-person meetings during the Month of November with the topic of conversation being Islamophobia Awareness Month.

The first event was attended by 12 women on 19th November. After a short C&C the discussion centred around why women don’t report cases of Islamophobia. The discussion included reasons to report and understanding why reporting of hate crime is crucial. They also discussed what they need to do to report a hate crime.

The second event was attended by 28 women on 29th November and alongside a MEND volunteer, Zainub Hussain (A victim of a severe Islamophobic hate crime) shared her very emotional account of what she experienced. Zainub is the victim of attempted murder, in a case where a man ran her over twice with his car, stating that he was trying to kill a Muslim.

The discussion also included recognising the issues that the local young people are facing in the light of Islamophobia and acknowledging that there is still lots more work to be done to tackle the problem of Islamophobia in Leicester
