On Sunday 31st October, the Islamophobia Awareness Month campaign was launched in Yorkshire and Humber at the Leeds Grand Mosque in partnership with British Muslim TV.
The event was in the form of a panel discussion which was hosted by Mohammed Abubakar, MEND Yorkshire and Humber Regional Manager. The panel included:
Richard Burgon – Member of Parliament for Leeds East.
Salman Sayyid – Head of School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds.
Maysoon Shafiq – Founder of Al Mu’minun in Kirklees.
Javed Bashir – Parliamentary Spokesperson, Liberal Democrats Calder Valley.
Heston Groenewald – Vicar at All Hallows Church in Leeds.
The discussion of the panel was based around the definition of Islamophobia, the responsibility of politicians and media outlets and what needs to happen on a local and national level to tackle the rise of Islamophobia. The event ended with a couple of questions from the audience.
We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to all of our panellists for the support they have shown to the IAM campaign.
