Ali* approached us after a year of abuse from his neighbour, ranging from racist slurs being daubed onto his fence, to faeces being thrown onto his lawn, to breaking his car windows.
He had followed up with the council, the housing association, and the police over the months, to little success.
We helped Ali work through all the paperwork, come up with a strategy, advised him on the strict timelines the police must keep to in the case of investigations and complaints, and we helped him in the drafting of the letters to the police. We continue to provide ongoing support to this case.
Genuinely following up on discrimination and hate crime is a slow, paper-filled, and difficult task. No one wants to admit that they have committed a hate crime or discriminated. The IRU caseworkers aim to make it as straightforward and easy as possible for victims navigate this challenging journey.
